Tooth Extraction McMinnville OR

Woman with eyes closed and touching jaw as if to indicate painTooth pain is not only frustrating, but it can also ruin your whole day.

While tooth pain can be the result of several different issues, it is generally linked to either decay or damage. Whenever possible, it is best to have this tooth repaired so that it can be saved.

However, some teeth cannot be fixed and will require a tooth extraction.

When getting a tooth extracted, Dr. Graser at Willamette Valley Periodontics make every effort to keep you comfortable during the procedure while also taking steps to prepare you for future restorations.

The added effort given by our team will ensure that you get the relief you need without compromising the future of your oral health.

Is There More Than One Type of Tooth Extraction?

There are two primary types of tooth extractions.

The first type is referred to as a simple extraction because it does not require that any incisions be made into your gum line. During a simple extraction, our team will start by providing you with a localized anesthetic.

The tooth is then carefully removed with specialized instruments.

The second type of extraction is a surgical extraction, and is most commonly performed by specialists who are minimizing any trauma to the surrounding jaw bone.

Surgical Extraction

A surgical extraction requires that our dentist make an incision into your gum line to expose the tooth.

Special instruments may be used to gently cut the ligament holding the tooth in place, and the tooth may be cut into multiple pieces to make it easier to extract, and is then removed. Once it is removed, our team will suture the incision closed.

Surgical extractions will leave your mouth feeling a little more tender than regular extractions and will require a follow-up appointment so our team can make sure your mouth is healing properly.

What Is a Socket Preservation Graft?

A socket preservation graft is an elective procedure that should be performed at the time of a tooth extraction.

If you opt for this treatment, our professional will place bone in the empty socket created when your tooth is removed.

This material will fuse with your jawbone over time and prevent the bone loss that normally occurs when a tooth is removed.

By receiving a preservation bone graft, you are making it easier to receive dental implants in the future.
