You can liken hardened plaque (Calculus) as being similar to barnacles under a ship bottom. We need to remove this "tartar" because bacteria live on this and cause gingival inflammation and disease. We can reshape and enhance this appearance. There are times when your dentist does not have enough solid tooth structure to grab onto for a crown.
